Tarmacadam, also know as Tarmac (which is a brand name) is the combination of tar with macadam.
Invented by John MacAdam, macadam is a surface made up of varying sizes of aggregate. Large, heavy aggregate at the base, a finer layer referred to as the binder layer, and finally, the very fine surface layer. These are compressed with the use of a roller.
However, when the use of motor cars because widespread, macadam surfaces would suffer damage. British businessman E. Purnell Hooley, noticed that when macadam was combined with tar, it created a much more hard wearing surface. When Hooley patented his Tar Macadam process in 1901, it became a huge success.
Tarmacadam has remained one of the most durable and cost effective method for surfacing roadways, driveways and paths for over 100 years.
When your looking to cut the costs on surfacing a large area, like a drive, cark park etc, then Tarmacadam is the most cost effective choice. Tarmacadam is also easy to maintain, and if the surface becomes stained or damaged, it is also easier to patch repair and clean.
Tarmacadam is also a simple, neat and attractive surface. When edged with other surfacing like brick, block paving or stone, you can achieve a much more refined finish and look.
There are also a range of coloured tarmacadam products available, however these can significantly increase the price.
